May 2017: New organism discovered by APJ Abdul Kalam at NASA named "APJ Abdul Kalam" after former President APJ Abdul Kalam. It is found only on the International Space Station in the form of bacteria. This bacteria is not found on earth. And likewise, researchers at NASA's most important laboratory, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), while working on an interplanetary trip, discovered a new bacterium and named it "Solibacillus kalamii".


Controversies 


• During his tenure as the President of India, he was criticized by Kalam for his inaction in deciding the fate of 20 out of 21 mercy petitions. He acted on only one mercy petition during his 5-year tenure, dismissing the petition of rapist Dhananjay Chatterjee, who was later hanged. Perhaps the most notable petition was that of Afzal Guru, who was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of India in 2004. His death sentence was hanging in the balance due to pending action on his mercy petition.

• In the year 2005, Kalam made a controversial decision to impose President's rule in Bihar. Due to which he faced severe criticism.

• In 2011, the establishment of a nuclear power plant at Kudankulam was supported by APJ Abdul Kalam. Due to which the local people were angry with the establishment of nuclear power plant. Locals expressed their displeasure with APJ Abdul Kalam, condemning his act.

He was born in a Tamil Muslim family in Rameswaram.

Kalam's father was the owner of a yacht that carried Hindu pilgrims between Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi (now uninhabited).

Kalam was the youngest of four brothers and a sister in his family.

His ancestors were rich merchants and zamindars and they mainly traded groceries in Sri Lanka.

His family was awarded the title of "Mara Kalam iyakkivar (wooden boat steerers)" for making pilgrims travel by boat from Sri Lanka to Pamban
.
In the year 1914, the bridge from Mainland to Pbanan was opened, affecting the livelihood of his family.

From childhood, Kalam saw and felt poverty very closely, because his parents' income was not enough to nurture the whole family. Seeing the poverty of his family, Kalam started the work of distributing newspapers. He used to collect newspapers falling out of the Dhanushkodi Mail train and sell it to the passengers traveling in another train, and at the same time World War had started. Kalam was just 10 when World War II was going on. In an interview, Kalam had revealed that he had felt the fire of the battle very closely, as the fire of the war slowly reached Rameswaram.

While working on a senior class project at MIT, the dean expressed dissatisfaction with his work, and warned Kalam that "if he does not finish the project for the next three days, he will be denied scholarship." After graduating from MIT in 1960, he joined the Aeronautical Development Establishment of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and started his career as a small hovercraft designer there. However, Kalam was not satisfied with working in the DRDO.

At DRDO in the year 1965, Kalam started working independently on a rocket project.

In the year 1980, in view of Kalam's educational leadership and research work, it was proposed by the government to employ the Kalam Advanced Missile Program under his direction.

Venkataraman (then Defense Minister) appointed Kalam as the Chief Executive of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) and allocated Rs 388 crore for the mission. Along with this, Kalam was instrumental in developing many successful missiles including Mission Agni and Mission Prithvi.

From July 1992 to December 1999, Kalam served as the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister and Secretary to DRDO. During this period he conducted the Pokhran-2 nuclear test, in which Kalam played an important political and technical role with Atal Bihari Vajpayee (the then Prime Minister of India).

During his residency at Rashtrapati Bhavan, he said that "he will pay for his meals himself." In 2011, a Hindi film "I Am Kalam" was released, portraying Kalam as a positive influence on a poor Rajasthani boy named 'Chhotu'.

On 27 July 2015, at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, when he was addressing the gathering on the topic of "Creating a Livable Planet Earth", he suddenly collapsed in just a fifth minute of his address (6:35 pm Indian time). When he was taken to the nearby Bethany Hospital, his pulse was stunted and no signs of his body coming to life were reflected. He was declared dead on the same day around 7:45 pm. According to sources, his last words were as follows: - "Funny guy! Are you doing well? " Which he told his assistant Srijanpal Singh.


Condoling the death of Dr. Abdul Kalam, entire India paid homage to him on social media. The Government of India declared a seven-day state mourning for this tragic event. Condoling his death, Pranab Mukherjee (the then President of India), Hamid Ansari (the then Vice President of India) and Rajnath Singh (the current Home Minister of India) and others offered their deepest condolences.
On 30 July 2015, the last action was performed with full state honors at Pei Karumbu Ground in Rameswaram. More than 3.5 lakh people participated in the last action including Narendra Modi (Indian Prime Minister), Rahul Gandhi, the Governor of Tamil Nadu and the Chief Ministers of Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on his last action.


On 27 July 2017, Narendra Modi (Indian Prime Minister) unveiled a memorial named after Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam on the "Abdul Kalam National Memorial" island of Pei Karumbu Rameswaram, built by DRDO. "Abdul Kalam National Memorial"
Kalam was very fond of his mother, and expressed his affection for his mother in a poem he wrote in his autobiography, "Wings of Fire":
