Early life

Sunil Mittal was born on 23 October 1957. His birth place is said to be Ludhiana, Punjab (India). He belongs to a Punjabi family. His father Satpal Mittal was a skilled politician. He had once been MP of Rajya Sabha and twice of Lok Sabha. Sunil's early practice began at the Wynberg Allen School, Mussoorie. But shortly after, he was admitted to Scindia School, Gwalior.


In the coming years, in 1976, he obtained a bachelor's degree in Arts and Sciences from Panjab University, Chandigarh. For which he studied at Arya College, Ludhiana in Ludhiana. Sunil Mittal was never attracted to studies. He always wanted to establish his business 




Business Career

Sunil Mittal started his business only at the age of 18 years. Together with his friends, he raised a capital of 20 thousand rupees. With this money, he started a cycle business. In the beginning of business, he used to make cycle parts for HERO Cycle Company of Brajmohan Munjal. With the passage of time, he came to know that it is difficult to get progress at this pace. That is why, together with his brothers, he started the "Bharti Overseas Trading Company". After some time he sold his business and moved to Mumbai.


In the year 1981, he bought import licenses from exporting companies of Punjab. After that Sunil Mittal imported portable electric generators from Japan and started selling it. He got a very good experience with this work. People also liked the product. But suddenly the business came to a standstill due to the ban on getting such products from Japan. Since only two companies were given license to produce the generator in India.


Sunil Mittal was a courageous entrepreneur. Little major troubles in life never weakened their faith. He started assembling push-button phones in India in 1984, which he had previously imported from Taiwan's Kingtel company. In 1986, Sunil Mittal founded the Bharti Telecom Limited (BTL) Company. At that time, he signed a contract with the German company AG Siemens to manufacture push button phones. With increasing experience, he was advancing the business.


In the coming years, he started manufacturing wireless telephones, fax machines and other useful telecom equipment. There is definitely a chance to touch the sky in the life of any entrepreneur. Sunil Mittal's fate opened when the Government of India started giving licenses for mobile phone services in the year 1992. Sunil Mittal, in collaboration with French telecom group Vivendi, acquired cellular licenses in Delhi as well as some other areas.


In the year 1995, he founded Bharti Cellular Limited (BCL). Now Mittal started developing the business under the brand Airtel. Seeing this, the number of users of this telecom company has crossed the 2 lakh mark. It became the first company to acquire this Milestoene. After this BSL became the first private national company to provide STD / ISD service for long distance in India. The service was named "IndiaOne".

In the year 2008-09, Sunil Mittal attempted to acquire South Africa's group MTN. There were several meetings for this Deal. But unfortunately for this agreement could not be accommodated. It is said that the South African government was not happy with this Deal, that is why this Deal went into cold settlements. In June 2010, under the leadership of Sunil Mittal, Bharti Telecom acquired South African Telecom Company "Jain Telecom". | At that time, that history was the largest acquisition by an Indian company.


In 2012, he ventured into retail trade. For this purpose, Sunil Mittal signed an agreement with the American company Wall Mart. Open more grocery stores. This partnership could not last long, so the agreement ended in the year 2013. At the end of 2013 Sunil Mittal announced the acquisition of Warid Congo. The deal made Bharti Airtel the largest telecom provider in Republic Congo.


In the year 2014, Sunil Mittal tried to buy "Loop Mobile". About 700 crore rupees were also spent for this deal. But the deal was later canceled. In May 2015, the merger of Bharti retail series "Easy" and Future Bazaar's "Big Bazaar" was announced. In the year 2015, Mittal announced to join the board of Space Internet company One Web. The adventure cost $ 500 million, of which Sunil Mittal was also an investor. (Other investors - Coca-Cola, Virgin and Qualcomm).


In 2016, Reliance JIO was making a splash in the telecom sector. That is why Mittal made major changes in Bharti Airtel to stay in the competition. Sunil Mittal has a very humble attitude towards society. He established the Bharti Foundation for this welfare purpose. Bharti Foundation runs more than 254 schools and also provides education to more than 46,000 children from weaker sections of the society.

Sunil Mittal has always been close to his family. He was married to Nyna. This couple has a total of three children. Which has two twin sons and a daughter. The daughter's name is Esha and one of her sons is named Kevin and the second son is Shravan. Sunil's father passed away in the year 1992. He had a heart attack.
